The "don't boo -- vote!" line has been a big thing for President Obama thus far on the campaign. It follows a simple formula -- mention of Republicans elicits boos, President silences boos with message people like -- encouraging anger, and then decrying it in a way that encourages eyes to be directed towards the prize, so to speak. That focus needs to be particularly acute this week, as the Democrats take their turn on the national stage in Charlotte, North Carolina, all in an effort to turn Carolina blue into Democratic blue in November.
Yesterday, President Obama kicked off his "Road to Charlotte" tour, which will take him through hurricane-ravaged New Orleans tomorrow. This morning, Melissa will preview the DNC by looking at just how the "big blue tent" is being raised -- and also, at what's in that tent. We just saw the Republicans build their tent with one misguiding, yet quite telling phrase: "We Built That!" What will the Democrats use?
Other topics we'll handle today include the big victories recently for voters in Ohio and other states, the sad state of health care in America, and the rampant increase in gun violence we're seeing in cities like Chicago. Melissa will also deliver a Footnote about a past DNC keynote speaker, and will give a DNC pop quiz to her guests, who include:
- Cristina Beltran, associate professor of Social and Cultural Analysis, New York University.
- Daniel Drezner, professor of International Politics at Tufts University.
- Anthony Foxx, mayor of Charlotte, NC.
- Dr. Neal Flomenbaum, emergency physician-in-chief, at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical Center.
- Aisha Moodie-Mills, advisor to the Center of American Progress Action Fund, and director of the FIRE Initiative.
- Rebecca Onie, co-founder and CEO of Health Leads.
- Ed Pawlowski, Democratic mayor of Allentown, PA.
- Myrna Perez, senior counsel for the Democracy program at the Brennan Center for Justice.
- Dr. Herb Smitherman, assistant dean of Community and Urban Health, Wayne State University School of Medicine.
As always, folks -- be sure to interact with us during the show here in the comments of this post, on Facebook, and on Twitter, using the hashtag #nerdland. We look forward to having you join us at 10am ET on msnbc!

In a Republican Tea Party world, one day factory owners would have to look out their window at the road leading to their factory and say, "I built that." I will be voting against that vision.
I know that many Caucasians don’t think they have a horse in the race of voter suppression. It does seem that is would be a win win for White Americans. But stop and think a minute. Why is the Republican Party doing everything they can to suppress the vote? If you have a “winning platform, a winning candidate and great ideas” why would you need to resort to fixing the game? America prides itself on being the OLDEST democracy in the world we should take pride in that and cherish our right to vote.
Why would an American Political Party resort to “cheating”? Fear, is the answer. The world is much more sophisticated today then it was 50 years ago. Minorities are well educated and understand the system more. When we see a Party that is 97% White trying to rig the game, it makes all Caucasians look bad. It makes them look insecure, petty, small and willful, quite frankly it makes you look desperate. Not just to Blacks and Hispanics, but to Asian, American Indians, Indian, Arabs, Pacific Islanders, Women and Gay Americans. Fear of losing power or the White American way of life has been with us since the beginning. The Salem Witch Trials, Slavery, The Civil War, Women’s Suffrage, The Chinese Immigration, The Japanese “AMERICAN’ Interment, the Civil Rights Movement, Italian and Irish Immigration…yes America it has not been easy to accept that this Country is a Melting Pot of delicious ingredients…and that is what makes us great. When we look back at these times we say to ourselves how could we have ever thought that way?….and we feel a “COLLECTIVE” shame.
I am calling on good fair-minded White Republicans and Democrats to say to our Party leaders this is America, come up with good solid winning ideas, put them out there for the American People to decide, “We the People”, don’t rig the game, all Americans lose when our Party’s rig the game. It adds another BLACK EYE to our great Country. Honestly, White Republicans should be insulted and angered by the GOP’ lack of confidence in them and that the Party leaders “THINK” that White Republicans are that insecure, petty and fearful that their members would want them to suppress the voting rights of their fellow Americans. Besides, that would DELEGIMIZE the outcome and it would be a HOLLOW victory preventing the new GOP President from having the support of all Americans.
Register as many Americans as possible and let them vote….the Vote is our right, it should be important to all Constitutional and Freedom Loving Americans. If the “vote” can be suppressed to target minorities, it can certainly be targeted to suppress, White Americans in different socio-economic situation, whites geographically, whites regionally, whites by education, whites by land ownership…..In the long run a political party see’s no color what they want is a grab for power, away from “We the People”
I watched an interesting piece on Current TV called 'The Mormon Candidate'. Excellent piece about the Moorman church taken directly from an interview with the Mormon Church Elders and superiors on the Church's grounds in Utah. The interviewer did a brilliant unbiased, and respectful job during his visit to the Mormon Church in Utah; and excellent questions.
I mention this because when I witnessed Mia Love speaking at the Republican Convention, I could help but to get a little information about her because she was sooo enthusiastic about her Republican party. I realized that she was born in NYC of Haitian immigrants. This Google search information immediately set off light bulbs in my head! I saw remnants of information I had seen on the Current TV investigative show, "The Mormon Candidate".
I learned that (interview done with recruited, young Haitian mother) that Mormon representatives took trips to Haiti to recruit Haitian women into the "Church". They brought these women to the US, married them for the sole purpose of marriage proliferation and child production (for me there is something not quite legal about this, but I do not know). Naturally the poor women were ready to leave the poverty and hunger in which they were living. This is immigration at it's easiest. They recruited from France as well.
I must say, right or wrong, I couldn't help but associate Mia Love's enthusiasm for the Mormon candidate, Romney, with her mother, mother's mother's introduction into this country. Right or wrong, I firmly believe Ms. Love is a remnant of "spousal importation" by the Mormon Church. Coincidence that she is a Mayor in Utah? Just sayin'.

Melissa, your choice of music is just one of the many things I love about your show. During your quiz you played the song from both parties nominating shows, Brooks n Dunn`s hit. This reminded me of a song by another artist on the Arista Nashville label, ``Take It Like A Man``, by Michelle Wright, (not to be confused with Chely Wright).
This song`s chorus is just what someone should say to dear Mitt, right after they tell him that he can`t suppress the vote to win!
Frankie, take some time to think before jumping on the talking point band wagon...why are roads built in the first place? Do you think roads are built in order to take people nowhere, into places without population, without cities, towns, businesses, etc? Roads are built in order to connect different communities, towns, cities, etc which are already established.Who decides when and where roads are to be built? Citizens, i.e. residents who recognize the need, business owners and community leaders who recognize that roads are essential for commerce and benefit everyone.
The point...citizens, business owners, community leaders, etc, meet with their elected representatives and officials in order to "decide" how ""their" tax dollars are going to be spent. Government doesn't simply decide, "hey" let's build a road so that Johnny A might one day be able to travel to Jenny B and engage in commerce." That's ridiculous.
The realistic scenario - Johnny A sees a demand for a product or service, he buys land, generates a business model and builds a factory/store front, recognizes that in order to get the product to his customers and make it easier for his customers to come to him, it would be good to have a road from his business to the nearest community. He goes to his representatives and asks for authorization, it's granted, he calls a town hall meeting, the community assembles and agrees that, yeah, it would be great to have a road from point A to B, but while we're at it, why not have a road go from A to B to C to D and back to A...this process goes on, and the residents & representatives decide together how the money will be raised. Will it be a toll road, or will it be a small temporary tax increase, or will it be privately funded. Once the funding is complete these same responsible members of the community begin looking at contractors to physically build the road. They agree that Fred K's construction is the highest quality and though it may take a little more time and cost a bit more, the result will be worth the wait...Fred builds the roads and the communities are now connected and all benefit from the service that johnny B provides. The representatives are happier because Johnny B just expanded his business in order to meet the higher demand for his products now that he can reach 3 communities, so in creating new positions of employment, Johnny B just added 15 new taxpayers. Do you see how it works?
Obama didn't build that.
Sorry but you forgot "ONE" teeny weeny little fact.....Corporations and Small Business are not the ONLY ones that pay taxes.....Everyone in the United States pays taxes of one form or another, property taxes, sales taxes, inheritance taxes, income taxes...we all pay taxes....The Golden Gate Bridge, The Hoover Dam, Route 66.....The working Middle Class also BUILT THAT!
The discussion about "compromise" always distresses me. Twenty years ago, I was learning about the very real differences between compromise and consensus. In consensus, you work and work until you come up with a solution that works for everyone. In order to do that, you have to give up on "either/or" thinking and understand that there are a universe of solutions to any problem. Compromise is not a golden principle any more than capitolism is a religion.
